Matthew 16:24 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. This morning, as I try to make a practice, I asked the Father to allow me to do something that will have an eternal impact. I pray that He allows me to bring Him glory from todays labor. I prayed for my students and wonder will they be able to pass the test.

I have the grand responsibility of training a generation, and so do you. There are many ways that people try to  gauge if their students are prepared for life when they leave their youth ministry. At our church we do not just want to prepare students to worship God while singing. While it is great to see a students stare towards the heavens as he or she sings of our Redeemer. We want them to love and worship that same God as they suffer somewhere in this world for His name sake.

Jesus went about ministry much different then most youth pastors do. When they would ask about an activity “will there be pizza”, “is it free”, “is it just like church”, “can we play playstation” or whatever questions teens want to know when invited to a youth event. He would answer “no” and you will have to be willing to suffer.

Jesus recruited His men in a way that none of of us dare. Look at Matt. 16:24 (above) it all seems to repel them from following. HOWEVER, there is one word in there that overcomes all the negative parts of the verse. Jesus says “follow ME”.

I pray my students will see what it means to deny themselves and take up a cross. This morning I am so aware of the fact that they will not be propelled to do this if they do not understand the ME in the verse. Teenagers have a low view of church, the Bible, and the ministry becuase they do not know the ME of the verse.

Jesus tells the disciples the road will be rough and you will have to deny your self, but you will be following ME. When we tell our students that the life they should live will be hard but they will be following the ME of Matt. 16 does it bring them any comfort?
